THE POWER OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TO FOSTER A NEW

ERA OF PROTECTION FOR NATURE

In partnership with the National Geographic Society, For Nature harnesses the power of exploration, science, and storytelling to amplify the Rights of Nature movement worldwide. This collaboration strengthens the reach of Rights of Nature research, educational programs, and storytelling efforts to inspire global action.

“Recognizing the Rights of Nature is vitally important because it directly changes the way in which society interacts with nature. It addresses how we combat climate change, govern and protect the ocean, approach endangered species conservation, talk about sustainability, plan coastal development, and invest our funds. It can be one of the most effective ways to hold corporations, governments, and people legally accountable to and financially responsible for their impact on nature.” - Callie Veelenturf

The National Geographic Society will deploy its best-in-class grants infrastructure to support For Nature, recruiting and funding effective, data-driven science and conservation leaders to advance Rights of Nature. Selected National Geographic Explorers will receive project funding, storytelling training, technology and communications support, and opportunities to elevate their work.

Through its award-winning Storytellers Collective and Impact Story Lab, the Society will equip practitioners to become compelling storytellers and produce media designed to inspire leaders and policymakers to advance the Rights of Nature worldwide.

Increasing Science-Based Rights of Nature Outcomes

  • Support for local communities around the world to advance their visions to recognize the Rights of Nature for specific species, habitats or ecosystems.

  • Increased collaboration among researchers, conservationists, advocates and communities working on advancing Rights of Nature initiatives.

  • Improved understanding among researchers regarding how to strategically connect and apply scientific data to the Rights of Nature framework.

  • Greater access for policymakers to insights and implementable strategies that advance conservation education about the Rights of Nature framework.
